This campground is a destination in its own right — and here’s why.

If you’re thinking of trying something new for your next Disney vacation, why not think outside the box and, well, stay outside the confines of a typical hotel room? Walt Disney World boasts an amazing campground, Fort Wilderness, and many avid campers would brag this campground is the among the best in the entire country, let alone the Orlando area. If you’ve got a RV — or are willing to rent one — you can save significant money and create a magical vacation that your family will talk about for years to come.
Here are five reasons why you’ll love Fort Wilderness:
- Your Wallet Will Thank You
Have you always dreamed of staying on Disney property but choke when you see the resorts’ nightly prices? There’s a not-so-secret way to enjoy the perks without breaking your budget – and that’s staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground. At the time of this article, the average price per night is only $83 (excluding taxes). That’s less than Disney’s Value Resorts. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy all the same on-site benefits like Magic Hours, free parking at the parks, and early Fast Pass reservations.
- You’ll Be Amazed by the Wilderness Around You
Before you start imagining bug spray and tents soaked with rain, this isn’t your typical campground. You’ll see everything from the huge class A bus RVs to the small pop-up campers. Don’t have your own rig? You can rent a camper from an outside vendor and bring it in. Or you can book one of Fort Wilderness’s free-standing cabins, which won’t feel like you’re staying at a hotel. Nestled within Disney’s property, you will find yourself forgetting you’re staying in a resort and not a National Park. The sites are generous among the trees (around 25’ wide and 25-65’ in length) and offer privacy from your neighbors. They feature a paved driveway, a sandy area, a picnic table, and a charcoal grill.Important: All sites having running water and electric hook-ups, and most will also include sewer.
Additionally, the amenities — like most Disney locations — are pristine. The bathhouses have private showers and are vigilantly cleaned. Worried about WiFi? No problem. You can access the wireless network from the comfort of your site. You can also hook in to Disney’s cable TV.
Big benefit: You may be wondering what to do with Fido while you’re on vacation. Kennel costs can be high, but if you’re staying at the Fort, you can bring him with you. Many loops allow pets, as well as some of the cabins for an additional charge. Fort Wilderness even has an expansive dog park where he can run free (and you can take a break from the crowded theme parks). Your dog might actually start loving Walt Disney World, too! ºoº
- You Can Ride a Boat to Magic Kingdom
Ever leave Magic Kingdom with all the masses and spy those smaller lines to take the small ferry boats? Did you wonder where those people are going? Well, one of the ferry boats goes to Ft. Wilderness campground, and many fellow campers will tell you that’s the best way to get to and from Magic Kingdom. You might have to stop at the Wilderness Lodge en route, but most of the time you’ll have direct access. Best yet, you’ll enjoy a pleasant ride across Bay Lake. There’s nothing quite like gliding up to Cinderella’s castle, lit up in the distance.
- You Can Eat Here — Without Always Cooking Meals Yourself
Even though you can make your own meals at your campsite (and save even more money), your main family chef may protest cooking while on vacation. Not to worry. Fort Wilderness boasts two popular dining options. You can check out Trails End Restaurant, which has an all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. One of the most popular dinner shows in Disney World is the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue, which has some family friendly hoe-down entertainment while you chow down on all-you-can-eat vittles. Mickey’s Backyard BBQ has exactly the sort of comfort food you’d expect, plus you can meet characters.
- You Can Do More Magical Activities Than You Can Even Imagine
You don’t have to go to the parks every day when you’re staying at Fort Wilderness. The campground is a destination in its own right.
You can take part in unique activities like archery, horseback riding, wagon/carriage rides, fishing, biking, motorized boat rentals, and canoeing. You can check out a movie under the stars or join Chip ‘N’ Dale for a campfire sing-a-long, which is one of the only free ways to meet a character. You can also rent a golf cart and travel along the many loops. During the holidays, you’ll see many campers getting festive and decorating for the season!
No matter what you’re looking for, Fort Wilderness is the best way to take advantage of on-property Disney perks while enjoying the comforts of home. Be sure to book well in advance, as sites do book up very quickly.
